I was one of those lucky patients who, during my first referral to a urologist for my bladder pain, found a provider who believed that I was suffering and then made every effort to help discover the source of that pain and find treatments to help. Mark Klein, MD, has one of the highest patient approval ratings in Kaiser Permanente and he deserves every accolade. He is kind, patient, understanding, compassionate and does not shy away from exploring treatments. If I have a therapy that I'm interested in trying, he will give me an honest, direct opinion about that therapy and truly work as a partner with me in treating my interstitial cystitis. I can't say enough good things about this gentle physician. He's just my lifeline for my care with IC.
That said, I also have to share just how wonderful his charge nurse, Pam Laughlin, is. When I'm having an IC flare or suspect that I'm having a UTI, I can call Pam and receive the help that I need. Whether its requesting a urine culture or ordering refills for my medication, Pam advocates for me as a patient. I know that I can trust her to believe that I need help and then find a way to get that to me. Granted, I never abuse that privilege. As an IC patient, I've learned how to sweat the small flares and not bother Pam or Dr. Klein if I screw up on diet and give myself a flare for a day or so. I save them for when my pain changes in character, becomes more complex or I feel that something unusual has happened.
In any case, the Santa Rosa Kaiser Permanente Urology Department ROCKS!!!! I feel so blessed to have them as part of my medical care team.
