After suffering from heavy periods for a few years, I finally went to a doctor to find out what was happening. I was diagnosed with fibroids and told I needed a hysterectomy, which was a shock. I went to another surgeon for a second opinion and he told me he could do a myomectomy, but not laparoscopically because I had too many fibroids. Luckily for me, a friend who had also had fibroids removed referred me to her surgeon, so I went to the Brigham and Women's Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery for a third opinion and was so glad I did! Dr. Gargiulo told me that not only could he save my uterus, but also that he could perform a laparoscopic procedure that would be minimally invasive. The 2-week recovery period was so much more appealing than the 6-8 weeks I would face with an abdominal surgery. A few weeks ago, I had a laparoscopic myomectomy with robotic assistance (Da Vinci surgery) and my life has changed. Unbelievably, it was a day surgery case. The procedure took longer than the 3 hrs originally scheduled, but I had no complications. The difference in my life has been unbelievable. I had 9 fibroids of varying sizes (2 were over 5 cm) and every type of fibroid you can have. One of the large fibroids completely filled my uterus. I thought my case was hopeless but Dr. Gargiulo proved me wrong. He and his surgical team removed all the fibroids with no adhesions and I was told I can try to get pregnant after 3 months(!!). I did not think this would be possible. I cannot thank Dr. Gargiulo and the surgical staff at Brigham enough. They were warm, caring, and attentive. Most of all, they were excellent at their jobs. I have never been so grateful for the advances in modern medicine and for the surgeons who develop and perfect these techniques.

Adenomyosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue, which normally lines the uterus, is present within and grows into the muscular walls of the uterus. This is most likely to happen late in your childbearing years and after you've had children. Endometrial ablation is unlikely to help women with symptomatic adenomyosis. This is simply because the destruction of the endometrium does not eliminate the adenomyosis, which is located much deeper in the uterine wall.

I live in Virginia but I had my procedure performed in Boston. There is just not enough experience around for patients undergoing conservative surgery for adenomyosis. I thought I should share my story to help other women to find the strength to look further than their local surgeons to have this rare problem fixed. Not many people are as adventurous as I have been and they end up being limited to their local surgeons by fear of insurmountable logistic issues.

I was diagnosed with Adenomyosis and my symptoms were Uterine enlargement (my uterus was enlarged to the size of a 16 week pregnancy), Long-term or heavy and abnormal menstrual bleeding lasting up to 10 days each month and Painful menstruation, which got increasingly worse with every cycle. I was practically living on Advil every 7 hours for up to 10 days during my cycle.

I visited my health care provider and she recommended that I go see a gynecologist. During a pelvic exam, the doctor found a soft, tender and slightly enlarged uterus. A vaginal ultrasound of the uterus revealed my adenomyosis. I also had a pelvic MRI for more confirmation of the condition as Ultrasound does not give definitive results. Since I’m 44 years old and not planning on having any more kids, my Gynecologist suggested that I should go through Robotic Laparoscopic Hysterectomy as that is the complete cure for Adenomyosis. I started browsing and looking at all these sites that said Hysterectomy should be my last resort for all the benign conditions as it has a lot of side effects. I believe in the fact that every form of treatment should be tried before a hysterectomy is ever considered. So I started looking for alternatives to hysterectomy and finally made a visit to Brighham and Women’s hospital in Boston and met with Dr. Gargiulo, Antonio Rosario, MD (Obstetrics/Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine) who works in the Center for Infertility and Reproductive Surgery. I also watched the video on Robotic Adenomyomectomy by Dr. Gargiulo, Antonio Rosario, MD. I had an MRI performed and I was diagnosed with Focal Adenomyosis. I scheduled a surgery with him and the surgery was performed on Sept.29th 2011. It was a laparoscopic and Robotic resection of Adenomyoma (Robotic Adenomyomectomy). It was a minimally invasive surgery and the blood loss was minimal and the postoperative recovery was smooth.

Results after 5 months: My uterus has reached it’s near normal size. Now I have a normal period and I am very pleased with the results of my surgery. I... [more..]

For 2 years I have struggled with anemia, due to heavy menstrual bleeding and mood change. I was referred by Dr. Janis Fox to see Dr Gargiulo. In my 3 visits Dr. Gargiulo explained the detail about Laparoscopy procedure. He was very caring, which he made me feel very comfortable to make decision. He warned me that during surgery they might switch to a full incision if needed, my response was that I trust his decision. The surgery went very well, I was on my feet the next day, and did not take any strong pain killer except Ibuprofen. Any women who are suffering from Uterine Fibroid, I strongly advise them to do Laparoscopy surgery with Dr. Gargiulo. I don’t have any words how to thank him. His bedside manner is great and I would say he is one of the best!!!
