Suggestions & Reviews for Adam FREEDHAND MD
Thomas P (Patient) 02-13-2011
On Wednesday February 9, 2011 Dr. Adam Freedhand preformed "Anterior Total Hip Replacement" on my left hip. The procedure was done at The Coon Joint Replacement Institute, at St. Helena Hospital in St, Helena, California.

My symptoms:

-Constant pain in my left hip and leg.
-Severe loss in range of motion in my left leg.
-Loss of sleep due to being woken up by pain.
-Inability to exercise without extreme pain the following several days.

X-rays showed:

-Almost total loss of cartilage in my left hip socket.
-Severe bone spurs on the head of my left femur.
-Severe arthritis in my left hip.

My surgery was scheduled for 10:30 am Wednesday morning February 9, 2011. I was sedated and wheeled into the OR on schedule. I was in the OR for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I awoke in the post-op recovery ward at St. Helena Hospital at approximately 3 pm. While I slowly regained my lucidity I was cared for by an expert staff and my wife Jennifer. My instructions were to remain in bed until the following morning when I would be seen by a Physical Therapist.

Every hour throughout the afternoon & evening I was visited by a recovery room nurse. Around 1 o'clock in the morning I woke up and curiosity was getting the best of me- I had to know what it felt like to have a titanium femoral head and hip socket. I disconnected my IV, removed my oxygen sensor, moved the tubes leading to my incision drain so they would reach the far side of my bed, rearranged the tubes on my ice water circulation sleeve so they would reach the far side of my bed, lowered the rails on the side of my bed and quietly slipped out of my hospital bed. It was a little after 1 am as I stood there in my darkened room. Standing on my good leg, my right leg. I slowly placed my left foot on the ground and even more slowly transferred my weight from my good leg to my 12 hour old titanium hip.

I was waiting for some sort of wave of pain to crash into me- it never happened. Nothing happened. I felt almost normal. On a pain scale of 0 - 10, my pain was 0.5. I stood there in my darkened room laughing. Stunning. The head of my femur had been removed 12 hours prior, a titanium insert was hammered into place and yet I was standing, unassisted and pain free.

As I was standing in the dark laughing- my recovery room nurse walked in; "OMG! What in the world are you doing Mr. Pheil?? Have you lost your mind??"

After being put back to bed and having my bedside rails "locked" into place I slept until morning. My Physical Therapist arrived on schedule and spent plenty of time reviewing my post-op recovery exercises and care.

Everyone involved with the operation came by to see me before I left the hospital. It would have been absolutely possible for me to walk out but regulations and a bit of common sense dictated that I was wheeled out of the hospital.

If you are ever considering hip replacement, I can enthusiastically recommend Dr. Adam Freedhand. His anterior approach and amazing s... [more..]
