I am an athlete, and in the spring of 2006, while running, I found it very hard to breathe. This continued for several weeks, and I noticed that my concentration was slipping and I was incredibly tired most of the day. I decided to see my ob/gyn, Dr. Joseph Salinas, as I have a 20 year history of anemia and heavy, painful periods. He called me personally as soon as the lab results came back and urged me to get emergency care as my hemoglobin count was six. I was reluctant to receive transfusions, so Dr. Salinas took the time to explain alternatives that might raise my count enough to allow him to perform a much needed hysterectomy (adenomyosis, fibroids). He listened to all of my fears and suggestions, accommodating me when he could, and providing excellent arguments when he couldn't. Finally, I was well enough by November to have the surgery. Within two month post-surgery, I was tripling my running distance and doubling my weight-bearing exercises. I am so grateful to Dr. Salinas for getting me back to a normal life.
