Matthew Handling - First State Orthopaedics
Dr. Handling performed arthoscopic surgery on my right shoulder on July 21, 2014. I was having severe shoulder pain with burning and numbness in right arm. What impressed me about Dr. Handling was his superior knowledge and his caring about my overall well being. I experienced a laberal tear of the right bicep in April 2014. On my first visit he looked at my arm and immediately knew what was wrong and explained how he could tell by the Popeyes appearance in my bicep. He wasted no time in having it x-rayed. He was exactly right. I was impressed how he wanted to try everything option and that injury usually doesn't require surgery. He started me in physical therapy and allowed me enough time before having me return to work that was in October 2013. I returned to work in January 2014 and after a short back on the job the pain returned. When I went back I explained the pain and he listened to me and respected my opinion that I thought something else was going on in my shoulder. After having a MRI he found several things wrong. What I respect about him was his willingness to listen and feeling that my concerns were appropriate. At that time he said surgery would be the best option and advised me to go home and think it over and discuss this with my wife because of the length of recovery and time out of work this showed me that he wasn't only interested in operating he was concerned about my financial situation also. I can't say how much that meant to me and my wife. I know this is a long story but I think it shows just that he isn't a great surgeon but he cares about his patients. I can say it has been 7 months and the shoulder feels like It did when I was in my teens I am a 52 year old male. I hope that this explains and may help someone that is undecided in a ortho doctor that Dr. Handling is the right choice I am sure you will feel the same if you decide to choose him. Also the whole team at First State Orthpaedics is a top notch team.
