Rose J (Patient) 10-16-2016
Dr. Johnstone is my gynecologist and surgeon. I had not been under the care of of a gynecologist for some time as mine had retired and the one I went to afterwards was just not a good fit, and I had become frustrated with trying to find one that had the skills, knowledge, and personality that I desired.

I was faced with an urgent need to find someone earlier this year when some heavy periods that I had been experiencing for quite some time began getting worse, to the point that I had to seek out emergency care. Dr. Johnstone was new to the family practice clinic that our family has used since the early 1980s. Her bio and CV were of interest to me, especially that she has interests in non-invasive surgery, and I was hoping to avoid anything major. Her clinical style and personality and what I was looking for were evident to be a good fit right off the bat at out first visit.

Dr. J. is softspoken but instills confidence even through her tone. She is an excellent listener, and asks questions not only to get a direct answer, but to explore further so as not to miss any component of what is going on. I addressed this with her, and she was very open about the fact that while she could administer something to help with the pain, most women found that in itself as painful or moreso than the procedure itself, but that she would go slow and if it became too much to handle, she would stop and we could do the other. She did in fact go slow, and was extremely good at carrying on a light conversation to take my mind off what what was going on, but yet at the same time asking me frequently how I was doing, and was very encouraging. This made me relax and took away whatever anxiety I had going in. Comparatively speaking, I find her technique to be quite gentle, respectful, and sensitive.

During the time while testing was being done, it was necessary for me to be medicated to stop the bleeding that had gotten me to a state of anemia bordering on needing an iron infusion. Normally one medication would be used, but I had a history of migraines triggered by it, so she provided me with options and the pros and cons of each. When the first one selected started to have problems doing its job, she worked with me to transition over to the other.

The result of all of the testing was a very large uterus, and many huge fibroids. She suggested a TAH with a large verti... [more..]
