I was Dr. Simchak's patient for four years while I was still living in Indianapolis, Indiana. I had been recently diagnosed with epilepsy, at age 37, which takes a huge emotional as well as physical toll on the patient. Dr. Simchak was not only professional but he was kind to me, providing advice and assistance when I was at the peak of my frustration with medications (with side effects) and limitations the seizures had placed on my once unemcumbered life. It was he who suggested and aided me in obtaining a seizure response dog and who was supportive when I lost my prep school teaching job because they did not feel I could perform because of my condition. I am now teaching at a college, I live with my seizure dog who is amazing and live too far away to have Dr. Simchak as my doctor but would recommend him to anyone wanting a physician who examines the case holistically, listens patiently, and can make decisions that consider the quality of life for the patient. I will always be grateful that during the worst time of my life I had the best doctor treating me. If I were to suggest improvement it would be with the larger healthcare system that oversees doctors like Dr. Simchak--I perceive they are herded about like cattle to different satellite offices and with unbelievable schedules bouncing from hospital to office and from town to town seeing patients. Frankly I do not know how these docs keep from collapsing from exhaustion. I never saw my doc show this but I cannot imagine it was not the case at times.
