Dr. Merkel made what was a scary procedure for me, as easy as possible. He was professional and even managed to make me smile through the pain. When I was leaving the hospital he made a point of letting me know that I could reach him 24-7 with questions or concerns. I had an abdominal hysterectomy and all of my questions were answered as well what options were available to me. I woouldn't wish this surgery on anyone, but if it's your only option I would make him your first choice.

Dr. Merkel is a great doctor. He spends plenty of time with his patients and has a great sense of humor. He is also great dealing with husbands.

Dr. Merkel is a wonderful physician. When I went in for surgery dealing with uterine fibroids, it was not planned that I would end up having a hysterectomy, although he took the time to discuss everything about my surgery with me in detail prior to the day of surgery, and we discussed the possibility that a hysterectomy may occur. I do a great deal of research and he is/has never been offended, but always welcomes a patient who is knowledgable about her problem or disease. He would often run late to discuss my concerns and present every possibility. After the hysterectomy, Dr. Merkel visited my room after I left Recovery to make sure that I was in good condition. The following day (which was a Saturday), he returned and spent about 90 minutes with me discussing the proceedure, drawing illustrations and explaining everything to me in great detail. He even listened while I cried and walked with me in the hallway while I dragged my I.V., etc. to ensure that my mental state was stable.

My post-surgical visits were always positive and Dr. Merkel was very thorough in his evaluation and advise. Whenever I have any gynecological problem or routine appointment, I always leave feeling confident that I have had good care. He always has a nurse from the office call or he will personally call to report test results or concerns. Dr. Merkel is extremely knowledgable, communicative and trustworthy. In addiditon, he has a great sense of humor.
