I have been Dr. Hughes patient for the past 5 1/2 years since I developed GBS in 2001. He has been unfailing kind, respectful, caring and open about options for treatment regarding chronic pain from peripheral nerve damage. He has never shown impatience when I did not agree with proposed changes to the regimen and has a number of times tried treatments that I suggested. I've never had an interaction with him that demeaned me despite my known history of depression. He seems young but has children almost ready for highschool, but is upbeat and energetic. He keeps up to date with new medications and is willing to use those without serious adverse effects. He was willing to treat depression problems but when I reached a point that his solutions did not seem to be enough to get me past some dysfunctional grief, he recommended psychiatric followup, but did not press it on me.
The only area that I would like to see change in is that messages must be left on the nurses answering machine and I have never spoken to him on the phone. Sometimes, I just write a letter if it is important but not urgent that I update him between scheduled appointments. His front office staff has also been friendly and helpful. His back office nurses seem to change fairly frequently and I have not really gotten a chance to know anyone since the first nurse left.
I highly recommend this physician to those in the Augusta area with neurological problems.
