Suggestions & Reviews for Robert Lynn HOLLEY MD
M (Patient) 08-13-2007
In 2001 two of this nation's top doctors practically insisted I have a hysterectomy because of their extreme concern that I might possibly have cancer. I almost had the surgery then, but, based on a lot of research, finally decided against it, and decided to take the wait and see approach. Sure enough, the thing that had caused those two doctors to worry (rapidly increasing fibroid growth) stopped, and my fibroids remained stable for six years.

Although throughout the decades I had relatively large fibroids, and ones which grew as I entered perimenopause, I did not have excessive bleeding or cramping, so they were basically asymptomatic. Yes, my belly stuck out a little bit, I frequently had mild lower abdominal discomfort and frequent urination, but these were all symptoms I could live with--I had no symptoms which would truly justify such major and possibly life-ending surgery. In spite of this, every single doctor over the years had urged my having a hysterectomy, always implying that due to the size of the fibroids cancer could not be ruled out. These doctors grudgingly took a "wait-and-see" approach only after I insisted upon one. I couldn't help but think that these doctors had dollar signs in their eyes whenever they saw my sonogram reports. I often wondered if they would have insisted on such major surgery had I been their daughter, sister or wife. I understand that hysterectomies are sometimes necessary, but in my case, and in many other cases, they simply are not.

Then, in 2005, I met Dr. Holley (again, after doing some research and being impressed by his credentials, along with word-of-mouth compliments from his peers). He immediately agreed with my wait and see approach, and recommended regular monitoring through ultrasound, which I continued to have. Finally there came a time earlier this year when two different doctors in my town (UAB is almost 3 hours away from me so I didn't feel it necessary to go to Dr. Holley's office just to get sonograms) became unusually alarmed by my sonogram results, but now because of uterine volume increase, not increase of the fibroids' size. This was a first for me, one symptom I'd not had throughout. I got scared, and returned to Dr. Holley.

After having his own staff do a sonogram, Dr. Holley informed me that although the risk of cancer remained small, he himself was now concerned due to the rapid growth in uterine volume (it had more than tripled in less than two years). He emphasized several times that he did not think I had cancer, but ethically was compelled to tell me that the possibility did exist due to the rapid volume increase. Because this was the one doctor who had not been "cut-happy", I knew that if he was concerned, then maybe I should be concerned as well. Unlike the other doctors he did not terrorize me (however subtly) with the fear of cancer, and reiterated as he had in the past that fibroid cancer is rare, and in this case the one cancer I might have was al...
