To further rule out causes of my extreme anemia, my gastroenterologist suggested I see a gynocologist and referred me to Dr. Gregory Chu, MD.
Of course, I was nervous at our initial consultation, not knowing what I might learn of my condition and being fearful of the unknown. Dr. Chu was very professional in his mannerisms, yet he was so friendly and comforting that I quickly felt at ease. Step by step he reviewed my symptoms with me, asked me questions, took notes and laid out a clear plan of action. Before scheduling me for a sonogram, Dr. Chu gave me a pelvic exam and immediately recognized that I had fibroid tumors [which was completely missed by my PCP when she did my annual pelvic exam and pap smear just one month prior]. It goes without saying that Dr. Chu knows what he is doing. He has performed this procedure numerous times a day [every day] for over 30 years, and knows exactly what to look/feel for. I left his office feeling reassured that I was on the right track to better health.
My sonogram revealed that I had fibroid tuors and a cyct on one of my ovaries. As it was determined that I needed a total hysterectomy (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and cervix), Dr. Chu clearly explained the procedure and recovery in layman's terms, and frequenty provided analogies to help me better understand. He explained to me that although common, this is a major surgery and suggested that I get a second opionion and (with a bright smile) assured me that his feelings would not be hurt. A few days before surgery, Dr. Chu let me know that my anxiety was quite normal and prescribed medication to help me relax and sleep (one pill on the eve of my surgery and one in the morning) .
I don't remember much about the morning of my surgery, but I do remember feeling relaxed. I remember speaking with Dr. Chu and the anesthesiologist, but I only vaguely remember being wheeled into the operating room. While in surgery, Dr. Chu also discovered that I had endometreosis. I was in the hospital from Tues morning thru late Thurs and Dr. Chu came to see me each day to flash me with a quick smile. Although he upset me (I cried) when he told me that I needed a blood transfusion prior to discharge, he was always pleasant and always a welcome sight. He even called me at home a few days after discharge to ask how I was feeing and I thought that was extemely heartwarming.
I can't think of a single thing that Dr. Chu could do to improve his practice because I think he is AWESOME just the way he is! And, the ladies that run his office, Linda and Kathy, are great too.
Was it helpful to you?
