Suggestions & Reviews for Robert RICHEY MD
Debbie Peterson (Patient) 01-21-2007
I first met Bob Richey when I was 14 and was having horrible pain in my lower abdomen. My Mom ended up taking me to the hospital because our family doctor thought I had an appendisitis. I spent 3 days having test trying to figure out what the problem was when a general surgeon told my parents it was a female problem I would have to deal with. My Mom took me to her GYN, Dr. Richey. I had an instant rapport with him except for the fact that at first he didn't believe I was really in as much pain as I said I was in. This was in the fall of 1981, I was a freshman in High School and a student athlete and musician. Dr. Richey decided it was best to do a laproscopy to see what the problem was. He was not only embarrassed but very apologetic when he spoke to me and my parents post-op. He first looked at me and told me he would never doubt me again, he had found the largest amount of Endometriosis that he had seen in anyone twice my age. For the next 6 years we did everything to try and stop the growth of this horrible disease. While I was a sophomore in college, I was in the Marching Hundred at Indiana University. We were preparing for a trip to a bowl game when I found a large cyst on my right ovary. He was reluctant to let me go, and the band director was terrified to let me go. All of my information was with me in case something were to happen while I was gone. Surgery was scheduled a few days after our return to town. The day after I got back, I showed up in his office to tell him I had yet another cyst on my left ovary that started giving me problems while I was gone. During the halftime show I was sure something terrible had happened. I couldn't take enough pain medication to relieve my pain. Following another ultrasound he did find a cyst twice the size of the other cyst. He immediately rescheduled my surgery and explained to my parents and myself that he would do everything he could to slavage what he could, but he couldn't rule-out a hysterectomy. I was devastated, I couldn't have this happen at the age of 20. Unfortunately, the surgery did have to be a total hysterectomy. when he went to tell my family after the surgery, he cried with them and relayed to them that this had been a life saving procedure. At some point during my trip, one of the cysts had ruptured, luckily another cyst had formed around it and held the fluid. Now, 20 years later, I am healthy and at the age of 40 just adopted a beautiful 3 yr old boy from foster care. When I went back for my yearly exam, I had my Mom watch my son during the exam and when it was over I had her bring him into the room. Once again we cried together. This man saved my life and has been there every step of the way for the last 20 years. That's why I reccommend Robert W. Richey!
