Dr. Gelber performed a hysterectomy for me. He patiently answered all my questions (and there were a lot). He is comforting, reassuring, knowledgable and experienced, and very good at explaining. He listened to me and treated me with respect -- even when I was wrong, he simply informed me enough that I could change my mind, without explicitly telling me that I was wrong.
Dr. Gelber has the skill to perform the operation with a less-invasive horizontal incision, something three other surgeons had not felt would be possible given the extremely large mass of fibroids that I had, and their location. And he did it so well that my recovery has been far easier than I had expected. I've had no bleeding at all, and surprisingly little pain. (I am being appropriately cautious, though, and will continue to follow post-op instructions to the letter -- I write this a week after surgery.)
I was quite impressed with Dr. Gelber at the pre-surgery consultations, but much more so now. I know my recovery wouldn't be nearly as smooth if I had the long vertical incision I'd been expecting.
A brief note to anyone reading this who has fibroids: Research carefully. I did. There are other options besides hysterectomy. This was the right one for me. It's not the best one for everyone. Hystersisters.com has a lot of good info, including alternatives.
